Basked in Alentejo’s golden glow, São Lourenço do Barrocal sits at the heart of an ancient farming village in the foothills of Monsaraz. From the outset, the founding principles have been clear: to restore a wild, quiet corner of Portugal, while preserving the estate’s integrity and sense of stillness.
The restoration was guided by Pritzker Prize winning-architect Eduardo Souto de Moura, who is known for architecture marked by restraint, honest materials and an instinct for place. The result is a collection of beautifully considered residences dotted through the landscape, with pared-back interiors designed to encourage rest and rejuvenation.
Days unfold easily between the winery, two restaurants, a farm shop stocked with estate produce and artisanal finds, and a Susanne Kaufmann spa. Guests can savour the magic of the estate by horse-riding among the orchard groves, picnicking beneath sun-dappled branches, or taking part in one of their many art and pottery workshops.
